Upcoming Courses for 2008 and 2009
Four and five day courses covering every aspect of canine behaviour and training:
In conjunction with Battersea Dog's and Cat's Home, London and Winsor and the Dogs Trust, Darlington and Liverpool, John Rogerson is able to offer a few sought after courses on dog behaviour and training. Battersea Dog's and Cat's Home and the Dogs Trust offer unique facilities in which to learn more about dog behaviour problems and training.
Within easy reach of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead International airports and easily accessible by public transport Battersea Dog's and Cat's Home in London and Winsor are ideal locations and provide a perfect environment in which to learn. the Dogs Trust, Darlington is also easily accessible by air - Durham Tees Valley airport, or train to Darlington Station. Similarly, the Dogs Trust, Liverpool is easily accessed by public transport.
With no shortage of dogs to work with and study, students should be able to gain more experience than on almost any other courses available today.
Whatever your involvement with dogs there is a course to suit your needs, from puppies to problem dogs, from training to teaching but places are strictly limited so early booking is advised to avoid the disappointment of having to wait another year for this unique opportunity to learn.
Which course is for me? All courses are designed as stand alone which means that you can take them in any order you wish although it would be preferable to do at least one other course prior to taking the aggression course. Read through this information and find the course that best suits your needs and simply fill in the Booking Form for UK Courses, sending it off with the correct deposit and a place will be reserved on the course of your choice on a first come first served basis.
What can I expect to gain from the course? In addition to a rare insight into the canine mind you should also expect to gain complete, up to the minute knowledge on both training techniques and behaviour therapy, which is vital for people either engaged in, or contemplating entering, the field of applied canine behaviour and training. All courses are designed to give an extensive and in-depth understanding of the subject matter and are limited to a maximum attendance of twenty students in order to give maximum time to individual needs. All students receive a certificate of attendance on the satisfactory completion of the course. The learning atmosphere is very relaxed and informal and ample time will be available to observe dogs within the facility of the rescue centres.
Because of the popularity of these courses, preference will be given to students already employed or those seeking a career within the field of dog behaviour and training. Overseas students are particularly welcome.
Dog Behaviour Foundation Course: Five Day Course
The emphasis is on dog behaviour in these two combined courses, both designed to give a sound understanding of how and why dogs do what they do. Essentially a theory only course which acts as a foundation for anyone contemplating a career in Canine Behaviour therapy and training. For the second half of this course the emphasis will be on dog behaviour problems and their treatment. Again, a theory only course but the perfect accompaniment to the practical courses available with John.
These two combined courses, which cover module 'A' of the Kennel Club Scheme, aim to ensure a broad base to enhance knowledge of dogs, show understanding of human and canine psychology, show recognition of limitations of professional advice, show appreciation of constructive team work in the best interest of the dog, and promote responsible dog ownership.

Canine Welfare & Rehabilitation Course
This is an in depth course that is of particular interest to anyone involved in rescue work. This course has been run as an in house teaching course by most of the leading animal charities and covers dog behaviour as applicable to adoption centres. It gives a fascinating insight into applied canine behaviour as it handles some of the issues facing rescue centres. Due to legal reasons it is becoming increasingly necessary for staff to temperament test dogs prior to homing. Most of the temperament tests used in this country and now adopted by UFAW (Universities Federation for Animal Welfare) were pioneered by John Rogerson, so who better to teach you these techniques. The course focuses on rehabilitation of problem dogs and will involve hands on work with dogs within the Dogs Home. When applying for a place on the course preference will be given to those students employed in an animal charity on a full or part time basis.

Training, Instructing and Handling Course
(The T & I course at Winsor is full)
This course covering a module of the Kennel Club Scheme, aims to show appreciation of the complexities involved in teaching, widen experience, understanding and knowledge, increase range of teaching methods and learning styles, show understanding of the many aspects common across areas and encourage self assessment, reflection and improvement.
This is a course that is essential for anyone who is either instructing or about to begin instructing in training classes. It is also essential for anyone engaged in Canine Behaviour Therapy and currently going through the Kennel Club Accreditation scheme. The course correctly examines all of the issues involved in the modern reward based training systems, so misunderstood and abused by many instructors practicing today. Both learning theory and practical applications are taught to students who will be working with rescue dogs during the course. There will be an opportunity to judge a competition and put the rescue dog that you will be working with on this course through the KC Good Citizen scheme.

Professional Dog Behaviour Counselling Course
Note: This course is full for 2008 only, but you can email us your name and telephone number to get on a waiting list in case of cancelation.
This course uses shelter or 'volunteer' dogs for the practical training sessions. For the first five days the dogs are trained for the British version for the Good Citizen silver and gold test and will be put through a mock test on the fifth day of the course. There are also many sessions on behaviour problem solving and participants will be required to work in small groups for the many interactive sessions. Day six and seven are spent training dogs for more specialised tasks which will largely exploit each dog's natural abilities. The practical sessions are complimented with lectures on the theory of learning and different approaches to solving many behaviour problems. In short, you get the best bits of the Puppy Development course, Behaviour Foundation course, Aggression course and Welfare course plus all of the practical training. Students on this course are also given projects for the evenings!

Canine Crime Scene Investigation Course
Canine Crime Scene Investigation: This is a course where the first three days are spent training you and your dog to become a super sleuth. The three training days consist of team building exercises, relationship building exercises, tracking, arson detection, explosive detection (we don't use real explosives!), drug detection (we don't use real drugs either), fire arms detection, and almost every exercise connected to controlling and having lots of fun with your dog. For the final two days you'll be working in a team of four (dogs and handlers) and attempting to solve a heinous crime using your canine detective and your powers of observation and problem solving skills to solve the case.
**Please Note** This course is not intended for law enforcement officers as it is a fun mystery course designed to create new ideas for running dog training classes where there's a real purpose and end result to the training.
For this course you bring your own dog, leash, food treats, and lots of toys and enthusiasm. No prior training is required, but as your dog will be expected to be socialable around other dogs and team members, no aggression problems please.

Dog Training and Behaviour Problem Solving
This course is ten days and covers the same subjects as John's 21 day course, but is an abbreviated version (without the behaviour modelling section), just right for those that cannot extend their time off work!
This course is limited to 16 students. You should be conversant with training procedures, have a good understanding of the various competitions that are available as well as having knowledge of the UK Kennel Club Good Citizen Test or the American KC Good Citizen Test (CGC).
The first phase of the course looks at basic training both in theory and in practice. You will be working with dogs from the Dogs Trust or selected "client" dogs. You will not work with any dog with which you have had even a passing relationship (i.e. bringing someone else's dog to the workshop). On this phase of the course, we will look at approaching many problems from a training perspective. How can you have a dog that is dog or people aggressive when outside the house, if it is trained to sit when told, walk correctly on the lead and come when called? Because we will be working with the more difficult dogs (i.e. not your own), it will allow you to develop better personal handling, training and communication skills. John believes that if YOU cannot handle a dog and get it to behave in a particular way, it will be impossible to teach the OWNER to carry out any behaviour modification procedures.
There will also be lectures to supplement the practical sessions and some self study in the evenings. You will work in small groups of four to discuss various related topics and then have the opportunity to put your theories into practice.
Phase Two of the course begins to focus on behaviour problems and we will look at diagnosing and modifying bad behaviour. You will be shown how to train dogs for very specific and specialised tasks, some of which will take place outside in public. You will again be working with problem 'dogs' some of which will involve handling and attempting to modify aggressive behaviour. To supplement the practical and theoretical sections, there will also be a great deal of self study and written tests. These tests will help to identify your areas of weakness so you can work on these weaknesses during the final phase of the course.
You will be assigned a dog. Over the 10 days, your dog assignment will change one or more times. You are responsible for walking and caring for your assigned dog so it is probably best if you do not plan to bring your own dogs. They will get little attention.
